I am writing to you as a Assyrian American, and would like to state some of my concerns. I feel there is a very important topic not being discussed concerning Iraq, the future of the Assyrians (ChaldoAssyrians, Chaldeans, and Syriacs). A public promise stating that America will help the Assyrians of Iraq is very important to the Assyrian community which numbers at approximately 400,000 people in the United States and 3.5 million globally. What Assyrians are requesting is simply a administrative-unit in the Nineveh Plains connected to the central government of Iraq. If this issue is addressed and implemented, I believe it would be beneficial towards a stronger relationship with the Assyrian community worldwide. This would lead to the Assyrians being more unified as a nation, and also make Assyrians more productive towards helping in world affairs. This would be a great start towards strengthening the Assyrians as a people, and a simple task since this request has already been approved in Article 125 of the Iraqi Constitution. “We are the Assyrians, the indigenous people of Iraq, and America should ensure us that we will be treated respectfully in our homeland.” In conclusion, I feel you will make the right decision, and choose to help the Assyrians. A response would be appreciated.
